Boukman Eksperyans
Haitian misik rasin
It's been almost a decade since Boukman Eksperyans first exploded from Haiti onto the international music scene. Since then it has become the foremost proponent of Haitian misik rasin (roots music).
Drawing upon compas, a popular Haitian dance music, and Vodou, one of the many forms the Yorban religion took after the African Diaspora, the Boukman sound blends ceremonial drumming, chant and dances from the traditional Vodou with modern electric instruments and arrangements. Four members of the Beaubrun family form the core of this nine-piece group whose joyous vocal harmonies, driving rhythms and passionate performance produce a totally infectious music that has captivated audiences around the world. The group takes the name "Boukman" from the Vodou priest and slave leader who organized and led the revolution against French colonial rule. This uprising led to Haiti's independence in 1804 and the creation of the first black republic in the world. The word "eksperyans" comes from the participatory aspect of the Vodou religion. The center of their message is the message of "ginen "- the state in which what you are thinking, saying and doing become one. For all its celebratory color on stage, the Boukman Eksperyans message is serious, spiritual and socially conscious with an uncompromising political edge. In the cauldron of unrest and oppression that is modern Haiti, the band's songs have served as rallying cries against all manner of ills imposed upon the Haitian people from both within and without.
